VinEdge Saves Your Wine For Another Time

by

Fact: I love wine. Is there anything I don’t like about wine? No…not really, except as soon as you pop that sweet cork (oh, that sounds dirty) it starts to go bad. Which explains why I often feel compelled to finish the whole bottle in one evening. While enjoyable as that may be, it isn’t great for my wallet or waistline. So when I discovered VinEdge, my heart skipped a beat.

VinEdge is just like any other wine preserver tool…but ten times better.

It’s super easy to use and the concept is pretty simple. It is a No Pump Wine Preserver. There are two main components, the pour spout and the disposable ‘air bags’. You simply attach an air bag to the pour spout and insert the folded bag into the bottle of wine. Attach the spout to the bottle…and pour.

The spout is engineered to let air into the bag, inflating it as wine leaves the bottle. This creates a vacuum effect and seals the wine so your wine stays oh so fresh! Genius right?!

This is a great tool if you have a really nice bottle of wine that you are enjoying slowly and don’t want it to spoil. I was so pleasantly surprised by this nifty tool and can’t believe I had never heard of it before. The only thing I didn’t love about it is the wine pours a bit slower than normal (this obviously isn’t the end of the world)

Another thing that sold me on VinEdge is the fact the founders are from Austin. You know I love a good entrepreneurial venture! The idea for VinEdge came from watching fellow wine drinkers repeatedly receive a glass of wine that was past its prime. (this has happened to me both as a customer and bartender. Nothing more annoying that receiving or serving wine that has gone bad) It took the founders over 3 years to develop this product and finally bring it to market, something I can COMPLETELY relate to!

You can see as the bag inflates it seals against the sides of the bottle to keep any air from coming into contact with the wine. I tested it with 3 different bottles of wine over the last month and half to make sure their claims weren’t full of air. (pun very intended) And they’re solid. It kicked my traditional pump preserver’s BUTT! I even left one bottle for two weeks and it still tasted the same from when I first opened it. We call that a Wine Win!

As we move into the gift-giving holiday season, this would make a GREAT gift for any wine lover!

No Bull$h*t Wine Review: Redux Zinfandel

by

This wine review is long over due. It’s taken me a good week after getting back from vacation to get back into the swing of things. All my calendars are out of whack; work, blog, life…all are just a hot mess. But I took this weekend to regroup, relax and get my mind right. I have a lot of great blog posts lined up this month (let’s just hope I time manage and actually get them posted!) but today I have a great No Bull$h*t wine review for you guys. If you follow me on Instagram or have ever read my blog before you’ll know I love me some good wine. So of course once I discovered Club W I was hooked. It’s a great way to discover new wine. A few weeks ago my first box arrived with 3 curated bottles just for me! J and I decided to crack the Redux Zinfandel and pair it with some homemade cauliflower crusted pizzas! (Get the recipe here!)

The pizzas turned out great! And while I don’t think I would pair this wine with a pizza in the future…you can’t have a bad night on the couch with Netflix, food and wine! I picture us heading out to the beach back home in California with a big blanket and this bottle to keep us warm.

I love the label! It’s beach-y, fun and super hipster. I dig it. So let’s review Redux, shall we:

I just received my second box and I’ve only had time to drink one…(sad) But so far I’m incredibly impressed with the service and quality. And I feel like they put a lot of energy and time into curating their wines. Grab your get FREE bottle of wine when you sign up here! And share with me what wines they curate for you!

My 7 essentials for serious at home wine-drinking

by

It’s obviously no secret I love to drink wine. I just feel deep down in my heart that wine is seriously just the perfect solution to every situation.

Best friend gets engaged?…giggle and drink wine.

Break up with your boyfriend?….cry and drink wine.

Date night?…look hot and drink wine.

Night alone?…wear sweatpants and drink wine.

See, every situation. I have perfected the art of polishing off a good bottle, I’ve been doing my ‘No BullSh*t wine reviews’ for a while now and feel like I’m in a place where I am comfortable spilling my most deepest and darkest wine-drinking secrets with you all. wine-essentials

1. Corkcicle

Truth, I actually don’t own one of these because I’m a habitual red drinker so I don’t often find myself needing to keep anything chilled, BUT it makes a great gift for any wine drinker, especially in these hot summer months. On the rare occasion I do want to keep my wine chilly, I always keep some frozen green or red grapes handy! They’ll keep your wine cold without watering it down!

2. Vinturi Aerator

This is probably the best christmas gift I’ve ever received from my brother! I never really gave much thought to aerating my wine before, but now that I have this, Wowza!! What a difference it makes! It’s perfect for when I don’t want to use my decanter and It also just makes the whole pouring experience more fun! Bubbles!

3. A Stylish Decanter

Another big girl purchase I made a while back was a good looking decanter. You can find them pretty much everywhere. Crate and Barrel’s swoon decanter is a beautiful choice and they always have them at places like Home Goods or Marshalls. They just add a bit of elegance at the dinner table. Perfect for a date night or when you want to trick your parents into thinking you have your shit together during family dinner at your place! (and here’s a quick read ‘Why Decant’ so you don’t look like an idiot when they ask why you’re using it!) You’re welcome.

4. Club W

Where do I start? Personally, I’m not a fan of the subscription box model, just because most of the time they are cheap samples, repetitive and I just can’t see the value in them (except Dollar Shave club, thumbs up to them) BUT Club W is my jam! I think they hit the nail on the head. It’s like a wine of the month club for the cool kids. You fill out a taste profile and they curate a box of 3 or more wines for you each month! It’s no frills, cancel anytime you want or edit your box whenever. I also love that they put so much work in making their whole site a really awesome experience. They make a video for every wine and even recommend dishes to accompany them!

If you love wine and have trouble making decisions, let someone else do it for you! The best part is I get it delivered to the office, a wine win! If you do give it a go, use this referral code 9864735121 and you get a FREE bottle! Bam, a double wine win!

 5. Houdini Wine Preserver

Don’t you hate when you grab that half bottle of wine, snuggle up and get all comfy just to discover your wine has gone bad? Well I do. Skunked wine is not sexy so this super affordable wine preserver helps keep that wine fresh and tasty!

6. A Fab Bottle Stopper

For those times when you know you won’t be needing the houdini (aka you’ll be finishing the bottle) a cute bottle stopper is paramount to successful wine drinking. I could probably do a whole post on them (so I probably will now) Like this little gnome with a perfect gold cap! He’s perfection!

 | 7. A simple set of wine glasses |

I found these Riedel wine glasses at Target and I think they look really sharp without a crazy price tag. They have a lot of affordable and quality wine glass sets. I’m in love with the look of stemless, but I recently bought a set of Marquis by Waterford tall-stemmed red wine glasses and I really love them too. My point is you just can never have too many wine glasses.

No Bull$h*t Wine Review: JK Chardonnay

by

A few weeks ago the girls and I got together for a little creative night. Our schedules finally aligned and we seized the opportunity to ditch the significants, grab the wine and just sit around the table with all our creative weapons of choice.creative date 1Whitney and Mary Catherine grabbed their nibs (haha sorry…I had to!) and worked on some Calligraphy (I had Whitney scribble me my favorite ‘forget the rules’ quote that I later illustrated), while Katie tackled some watercolor script. I grabbed my watercolors, new markers and threw together some illustrations. I concluded that I paint better under the influence. I got a little handsy with the wine and got a little goofy, but all in a night’s work right? I brought a bottle of JK Chardonnay with me and I was impressed…no-bs-wine-review-jkWine just makes me so happy and drinking it is one of my favorite things to do. It makes me sad that I haven’t been able to indulge in one of my favorite past-times as much because I’ve just been a hot mess. close up jk 2So…that’s all I got for now. What have you been sipping lately?

Cinco De Drinko! Refreshing and Healthy Cocktails

by

What a lovely time of year. The weather is finally cooperating and summer is here! I’ve been so busy I also forgot it was Cinco De Mayo tomorrow. Now that I don’t bartend anymore I’m not as aware of holidays, but J still is so he reminded me! (And he’s half-mexican so he has to remember) Being the healthy former bartender that I am, I decided to put together a few recipes for the holiday that are easy, yummy and low-cal! Holidays are an evil trap. They are full of family, friends, fun…and calories. It’s frustrating that people don’t realize how many liquid calories they consume just in drinking. Ouch! So if you’re watching the waistline for summer, think before you drink and make good decisions. Here are two original recipes I whipped up today in under 10 minutes that will keep you giggly, not jiggly. Let’s get cocktail-makin’ shall we?

Margtini…see what I did there? It’s a margarita in a martini glass. So my first drink is a refreshing, frothy and guilt-free blend of fresh (or frozen) cantaloupe, Tequila, simple syrup and ice. That’s all?! THAT’S ALL!

Ingredients and Serving

1.5 oz Silver Tequila (I used Patron…I love Dolce Vida and Republic as they are both organic fyi

1 oz of Simple Syrup

quarter of a small/medium sized Cantaloupe (or equivalent in frozen chunks, frozen will result in a slightly different consistency so just play around!)

4-5 medium-sized ice cubes

Combine all in blender (I used the individual cup on my Ninja) and blend until smooth. Serve in martini glass dressed with wedge of cantaloupe and lime.

This really could be done with any melon too, I just love cantaloupe. It’s also bright, festive and just perfect for a fun holiday like Cinco de Mayo!

I think my favorite part is that blending the cantaloupe aerates it, resulting in a frothy, airy texture which is perfect for long, hot days of drinking when you don’t want to be bogged down by beer or wine.

The second recipe is a tried and true favorite, but instead of taking the easy way out and reaching for a pre-made mix (read: Sugar and artificial ingredient overload!) give this super easy recipe a try and you’ll be the hero of the Cinco!

I know…you want one NOW! This one is perfecto; combining the sweet tanginess of strawberries and the sweet savory of basil with a twist of lime. It’s a cocktail that is easily prepared in large batches and ingredients are easy to come by. Best of all you get 4-5 strawberries per serving without the guilt of a nasty mix. (You’ll never want a “mixer” drink again)

Ingredients and Serving

1.5 oz Silver Tequila

1 oz of Simple Syrup

4-5 medium to large fresh strawberries

2-3 fresh sweet basil leaves, be sure to rub them together in your hands/fingers before (or if you have a muddler even better!) then add to the blender)

4-5 medium-sized ice cubes

squeeze of half a small lime

Combine all in blender or smoothie maker and blend until smooth. Serve in festive drinkware. I picked up the adorable aqua-rimmed plastic tumbler from Target. Garnish with a fresh strawberry, some basil. I added extra flair to mine with a flamingo stir-stick!

These cocktails will save you a TON of empty calories and sugars! By using fruits with high water content, there is no need for additional mixers or add-ins. The ice provides a good base and the Tequila…is well, Tequila! YA! If you’re not a simple syrup fan, experiment with Agave Nectar or local raw honey. This could give them a very unique flavor as honey is very dominant. (let me know how it goes)

DSCF0028

And yes…the basil is fresh from my Herb Planter I talked about in yesterday’s post! And yes…I’m smiling and patting myself on the back for not killing it yet!

Obviously everyone’s taste preferences are different. I prefer a more tart, less sweet drink so I go very easy on any added sweeteners and I also am conscious of what I’m adding to my drinks. But play around and figure out what you love! Have a safe, responsible and fun Cinco de Mayo!
